Loxley House

Nottingham, United Kingdom

Loxley House is the administrative office of Nottingham City Council and an office base for the Department of Work and Pensions and Nottingham City Homes in the south of Nottingham city centre.

Applications Covered:

The Challenge

The original lighting at Loxley House consisted of standard T5 and compact fluorescent luminaires and an outdated control system. The client approached Thorlux to upgrade all the non-LED lighting with energy efficient LED alternatives including a smart control system with daylight and occupancy sensors integrated into the building's BMS (building management system) and a fully automated emergency lighting testing system.

The Solution

Utilising the existing aluminium bodies, Thorlux designed custom made gear trays eliminating the expense and inconvenience of replacing the entire luminaire. Changing the traditional light sources to LED realises significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency, maintenance costs and luminaire lifetime. Additional to this, by making use of the existing lighting positions the install time was significantly reduced.

The addition of the SmartScan wireless lighting management system ensures that the new installation combines the necessary energy savings with an improved quality of lighting throughout the building. Integral Smart sensors monitor ambient light and presence, control output to the correct level, dim and switch when there is sufficient daylight and illuminate only when the area is occupied.

Smartscan emergency luminaires test according to the schedule specified in BS EN 62034:2012 and display current status via a bi-colour LED. The SmartScan programmer can be used to download detailed status information and initiate manual testing. SmartScan uses the latest wireless mesh technology to replace wired communications signals between each luminaire simplifying installation particularly in retrofit situations.
