Paris Nord Villepinte
Paris, France
Situated north-east of Paris and close to Charles de Gaulle airport, Paris Nord Villepinte is France's largest exhibition centre. The complex, managed by the Viparis group, covers over 242,000 m² and comprises nine exhibition halls. Every year, Paris Nord Villepinte welcomes tens of thousands of visitors from across France and around the world.

The Challenge
Site managers for the Viparis group had decided to renew the lighting scheme in two of the exhibition halls to cut expensive maintenance costs and reduce their energy consumption. Hall 5A (50,040 m²) and Hall 6 (47,654 m²) both have ceilings that are nine metres high, and between them were equipped with over 7,000 inefficient linear fluorescent luminaires. The total electrical load for lighting the two halls was approximately 638 kW. Light distribution was also uneven throughout the halls.
Viparis approached Thorlux France to design a more efficient lighting plan, with a secondary objective of increasing the level and uniformity of light throughout the two halls.
The Solution
Thorlux engineers specified high-performance Visio LED luminaires for the task. In total, 1,177 luminaires were installed across the two halls. Engineers selected the high-performance broad distribution versions, which provided an increase in overall light levels from an average of 200 lux before the installation to more than 350 lux after, with vastly fewer fittings. Furthermore, the new luminaires have reduced energy consumption to 241 kW – a 62% energy saving. The new installation has also resulted in greater evenness of light distribution.
All Visio luminaires were supplied with the award-winning Thorlux SmartScan lighting management system allowing Viparis site management to control their lighting and monitor their energy performance data and operational information. SmartScan luminaires contain a discrete integral sensor which monitors ambient light and presence and controls light output to the correct level, ensuring that the area is only illuminated when occupied. A feature of particular interest to Viparis site management team was the ability to display occupancy profiling information. Through the SmartScan web platform, the occupancy profile of each luminaire sensor is displayed enabling site management to better understand the ways in which customers use the hall spaces.
With the installation now complete, Thorlux has helped site management achieve their stated goals of increasing both efficiency and performance.
