Metro Logistics Germany GmbH is part of the international food wholesaler METRO. The company was looking for sustainable, modern LED lighting for its 30,000 square metre warehouse in Hamm, Germany, that would align with the group's sustainability aspirations.

Metro Logistics managers were looking for a comprehensive, reliable lighting solution providing radio-networked luminaires that could adapt to the changing usage requirements of the warehouse. The lighting solution had to be energy efficient, with sustainable consumption. The luminaires themselves also had to be produced sustainably.

Following advice from Thorlux Lighting's German sister company, SchahlLED Lighting GmbH, Metro Logistics opted for an integrated and controlled solution consisting of Thorlux LED high-bay luminaires. The Visio high-bay luminaire, Thoroproof diffuser luminaire and the SmartScan lighting management system were all used.

SmartScan is a revolutionary wireless IoT lighting management system that maximises energy savings through intelligent presence detection and daylight harvesting. In addition, the system allows users to monitor their energy performance data and complete operational information for all SmartScan standard and emergency luminaires via the SmartScan website.

It took just under 450 new luminaires with high-performance optics to replace almost 2,800 old luminaires. The refurbishment has achieved an area-wide light level of 300 lux throughout with significantly fewer luminaires installed – around one and a half times brighter than before.

Operating costs and electricity consumption at the Hamm warehouse have dropped by 65% since the installation of the new luminaires and SmartScan system. The amortisation period for the refurbishment will be approximately 1.5 years.
