ESOS and energy-efficient lighting – what you need to know
Posted on Friday, August 30, 2024
Has a recent ESOS audit highlighted the need for your organisation to save energy? Switching to a controlled, efficient LED lighting system can save energy, reduce emissions, reduce costs, and help achieve ESOS ambitions.
What is ESOS?
UK companies that employ 250 people or more or have an annual turnover of £44 million must comply with the Government’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). ESOS imposes mandatory assessments every four years of energy use and opportunities for improving energy efficiencies across buildings, processes, and transport.
Changes to ESOS Phase 3 introduce requirements for more detailed reporting, greater disclosure, a public action plan and yearly process updates. Following an ESOS audit, the deadline to submit a four-year plan of action to the Environment Agency is 5th December 2024.
For more information, please visit the Government’s website.
What if I don’t comply with ESOS?
ESOS regulators are empowered to impose initial penalties of £5,000 for failure to notify or maintain records and up to £50,000 for failure to undertake an energy audit or providing a false or misleading statement.
Once a survey has been completed, companies must have a plan of action ready by December 2024. It is important to emphasise the clear commercial and environmental benefits of adopting greater energy efficiency.
How can Thorlux help my ESOS plan?
Lighting accounts for nearly 15% of energy usage worldwide. Outdated equipment and ineffective controls remain widespread, leaving considerable scope for improved efficiency. If you are looking for an effective way of reducing energy consumption, start thinking about modernising your lighting system.
Thorlux Lighting offers a site survey and report for businesses looking to upgrade their lighting systems. The report assesses your current lighting levels and calculates power consumption costs. Thorlux pairs this evaluation with a detailed proposal for an optimised LED lighting system, clearly showing the potential efficiency improvements and energy cost reductions as well as the ROI period and expected savings going forward. Thorlux SmartScan lighting management system users frequently enjoy savings of 70%.
