Internal Stairwells
The lighting needs to be designed carefully to minimise the risk of falls and serious injury. Glare can be a major hazard for anyone descending the stairs, so luminaires need to be chosen and positioned to avoid a glare hazard for those descending. If wall lights are used on the landing at the bottom of the stairs upward glare needs to be minimised.
CIBSE: SLL Lighting Guide 9 – Lighting for communal residential buildings 2013 recommends 100 lux on the stair treads.
